Efforts are underway to increase access to farmers markets for low-income Vermonters.

Less than 1 percent of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits coming into Vermont are redeemed at the 45 farmers markets capable of processing these benefits.

There are hurdles at every step, ranging from the costly equipment necessary for running EBT cards, to a lack of consumer awareness of the coupon initiatives (such as the new Crop Cash program) that make markets more affordable.

Vermont Edition spoke to Abbey Willard, the local foods administrator for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets about efforts underway to make farmers markets more accessible for SNAP benefit users.
