VPR Cafe: What's Going On Behind The Scenes At Farmers Markets?

At farmers markets, such as this one in Burlington, people can buy anything from produce to hand-made crafts. There are dozens of markets around the state and despite the popularity, there are questions about what makes a viable and successful market.

There are dozens of farmers markets across Vermont. The number peaked at 87 in 2010 and has since gone down. Still, there are questions about what makes a successful market and how to keep markets thriving in the future.

“What seems to be a trend is you need enough vendors to attract people to shop but not too many that people feel like they’re tripping over each other,” says Suzanne Podhaizer, a food writer at Seven Days. “It needs to feel expansive but not overwhelming.”
