Even if bitter cold temperatures and mounting piles of snow aren't your cup of tea, there is one thing to love about winter: comfort food! From chicken soup to chili and mac 'n cheese to dumplings, many of these dishes not only warm us physically, but also emotionally.
A particular meal sometimes conjures up a memory from childhood or of a family member who might have cooked it. Recently, while writing a story about cider-steamed mussels at TheKitchen Table Bistro in Richmond, Seven Days food writer, Melissa Pasanen, was reminded of a time when her family would feast on mussles during vacations in France. And that memory was the impetus for this edition of The VPR Cafe.
Listen in as Pasanen shares her favorite comfort foods to make at home, as well as some she discovered while dining out around the region. Meanwhile, read more about those mussels that inspired our comfort food episode in her article, "All Hail The Cider-Steamed Mussels At Kitchen Table Bistro."
