Waste Not: Getting Banana Peels Out Of The Landfill

AP/Toby Talbot

Mon, Aug 5 Noon and 7 PM  Last May, the Vermont Legislature passed Act 148. Noting that waste diversion rates have stagnated in the state over the last 10 years, the new law would ensure that a significant portion of the recyclables, leaf and yard waste and food waste would be diverted from landfills.

A new draft report evaluating Vermont’s current system and making recommendations to reach Act 148’s goals has just been released. Justin Johnson, Deputy Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, discusses the report. And John Malter, Administrator of the Mad River Resource Management Alliance explains the efforts his group has made to divert e-waste, textiles, crank case oil and other materials from the waste stream.

Post your questions or comments regarding our solid waste system here or email them to vermontedition@vpr.net.

Also on the program, Susan Swasta of the Vermont State Archives has been organizing the court records of Orleans, Caledonia, and Lamoille Counties. She shares some of the most compelling cases she has come across.

And we return to Summer School and the Highland tradition learn to play the bagpipes from Iain MacHarg who founded the Vermont Institute for Celtic Arts.
