Some towns in Vermont have made the difficult decision to close their schools. They've decided that it’s more prudent to “tuition out” their students to other public schools, or in some cases, private schools. But supporters of the current system maintain that local schools provide a foundation for local communities.
Rob Roper, president of the Ethan Allen Institute, and Paul Cillo, president of the Public Assets Institute have been debating these points in a series of events across the state. On Vermont Edition, they discuss these questions as well as whether law makers should seriously consider implementing a new education financing plan for all schools across the state.
Also on the program, Amanda St. Pierre, the head of Dairy Farmers Working Together, discusses how the new Farm Bill will affect Vermont’s farmers.
