A New Idea For Paying For Education

UMass Amherst Libraries
Property taxes continue to rise to fund Vermont's schools.

How education is funded in Vermont has been a contentious issue for years. And property taxes have been rising each year to fund schools. So has the time come for Vermont to make significant changes in the way that education is financed?
We hear from Londerry Representative Oliver Olsen and Colchester Representative Jim Condon who are sponsoring a plan that would place greater emphasis on the income tax to raise money for schools.

Post your comments or questions about education funding here or email them to vermontedition@vpr.net.

Also on the program, VPR's Pete Hirschfeld provides analysis on the request to have the state employees union reopen their contract to save the state money and the outlook for the governor's plan to raise the payroll tax to reduce the Medicaid cost shift.

Broadcast live on Fri., Feb. 20, 2015 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
