Lydia Moreman, a senior at Champlain Valley Union High School, gets inspiration for this piece, When The Time Comes, from the natural world around her – “the owl’s hoot,” “the dancing trees,” the rocks and forest.
When The Time Comes
By Lydia Moreman
Grade 12, Champlain Valley Union High School
When tomorrow falls into slumber
and the owl’s hoot can’t wake it up,
I’ll meet you by the waterfront,
where the weeping dock hides.
When the badger stands up tall
and preaches to the sun
near the dancing trees,
I’ll run into your arms.
When the stars stop shining
and the fuschia moon cries out,
I’ll visit our old forest
and sit among the rocks.
If you want to find me,
use the moss as your guide.
Among the hanging trumpets,
I’ll wait for you to arrive.
