A Plan To Expand Child Protection Services In Vermont

iStock
The Shumlin administration says that Vermont's child-welfare system is being stretched thin and needs more resources.

The Shumlin administration has called for an $8.4-million expansion of the state's child welfare system, including hiring more than 40 new workers. The Governor says a thinly-stretched DCF and other agencies need more resources to respond to Vermont's opiate addiction crisis. We're talking about the plan and the pressures on the state's child protection services.

We're talking to Ken Schatz, commissioner of the Department of Children and Families. Also to Democratic State Representative Ann Pugh, a former social worker who chairs the House Committee on Human Services and the Joint Legislative Child Protection Committee.

Post your questions or comments here or email us at vermontedition@vpr.net.

Also on the program, we talk to University of Vermont student and National Guard Spc. Skylar Anderson, the first woman to be certified as a combat engineer.

And VPR Classical's Kari Anderson speaks to the new executive director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Ben Cadwallader.

Broadcast live on Tues., December 8, 2015 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
