Loonie Loses Altitude: The Canadian Exchange Rate

Ryan Remiorz

AP/The Canadian Press
The Canadian loonie is hovering around 70 cents against the American dollar.

Fourteen years ago, the Canadian dollar was worth 62 cents on the U.S. dollar. Through the years, the loonie slowly rebounded and reached even par with its American counterpart.

But it has taken a nose dive lately and is now down to around 70 cents. So what does a low loonie mean to the economies of Canada and border states like Vermont?

McGill University Director of North American Studies Tom Velk and St. Michael's College Associate Professor of Economics Patrick Walsh discuss the reasons behind the dropping Canadian dollar and its effects.

Also on the program, Amy Small has been named Senior Rabbi of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue of Burlington, the state's largest Jewish congregation. We talk with Rabbi Small about her plans for the congregation.

Broadcast live on Thurs., Feb. 18, 2016 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
