The Southern Rescue Pet Pipeline

Shy Lite
/
Potter's Angels Rescue
Leah, shown here, is a dog available for adoption by Vermont's Potter's Angels Rescue operation. We're talking about "rescue pets" and some of the issues involved.

It's an increasingly common way Vermonters get their pets: dogs brought up from so-called "high-kill" shelters in Southern states to find homes here. It saves animals' lives, but can also pose challenges: from disease to behavior problems to insufficient vetting of potential owners. We're looking at the Southern pet pipeline.

Check out an album of adopted pets sent in by out listeners on our Facebook page!

We're joined by Dr. Susan McMillan, veterinarian and owner of the Old North End Veterinary Clinic and Vet to Pet Mobile Veterinary Service in Burlington. She serves on the board of directors of the Humane Society of Chittenden County. Also by Wes Gibbs, volunteer program and transportation coordinator for Potter's Angels Rescue.

Broadcast live on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
