Charismatic Microfauna And You: It's The Bug Show!

Are you a butterfly watcher? A beekeeper? Do you want to broaden your scope of bug knowledge to the lives and habits of moths, dragonflies and tiger beetles? You're in luck: it's our annual bug show!

We're talking with experts about insect-watching, the state's pollinators and what effect the year's weird weather has had on the bug population.

We're joined by Kent McFarland, a conservation biologist and co-host of VPR's Outdoor Radio. And by writer and field naturalist Bryan Pfeiffer.

These are some resources mentioned by our guests during the show:

  • Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America by Eric R. Eaton and Kenn Kaufman
  • Common Spiders of North America by Richard A. Bradley, illustrated by Steve Buchanan
  • Peterson Field Guide to Moths of Northeastern North America by David Beadle and Seabrooke Leckie

McFarland also recommended these additional links:

Plus, see some photographs provided by Pfeiffer in the slideshow at the top of the post.
Also on the program: We're talking with Peggy Farabaugh, a Vermont small business owner about how she's collaborating with activists from across three countries on conserving habitats for monarch butterflies.

Broadcast on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016 at noon and 7 p.m.
