Vermont Edition Variety Pack

Vermont is an eclectic place, and we're serving up an eclectic mix of topics in today's program - from technology that's changing the way we think about cardboard, to the fantasy sci-fi world of steampunk, to the serious work of protecting civil liberties.

Cardboard, You Say?

The ubiquitous material been around since the early 1800s, but a couple of Vermonters have come up with a  novel use of the old packaging material: they're building cardboard pinball machines. Ben T. Matchstick and Pete Talbot explain the PinBox 3000 and why they founded the Cardboard Teck Instantute.
 

Springfield Goes Steampunk

This weekend, Springfield will host its second annual Steampunk Festival. Sabrina Smith, the festival's organizer, explains the draw of steampunk's Victorian-era style fused with the futuristic ideas. 

ACLU-Vermont's New Leader

Earlier this year, James Duff Lyallof Tucson, Arizona, was named the new executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union in Vermont, succeeding Allen Gilbert who had led the organization for 12 years.  We learn about his priorities for ACLU-Vermont, and how his previous experience in the southwest informs the work he'll do in Vermont.

Patti is an integral part of VPR's news effort and part of the team that created Vermont Edition. As executive producer, Patti supervises the team that puts Vermont Edition on the air every day, working with producers to select and research show ideas, select guests and develop the sound and tone of the program.
Steve has been with VPR since 1994, first serving as host of VPR’s public affairs program and then as a reporter, based in Central Vermont. Many VPR listeners recognize Steve for his special reports from Iran, providing a glimpse of this country that is usually hidden from the rest of the world. Prior to working with VPR, Steve served as program director for WNCS for 17 years, and also worked as news director for WCVR in Randolph. A graduate of Northern Arizona University, Steve also worked for stations in Phoenix and Tucson before moving to Vermont in 1972. Steve has been honored multiple times with national and regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for his VPR reporting, including a 2011 win for best documentary for his report, Afghanistan's Other War.
