VPR Cafe: Gelato From Local Farms In Vermont

Melissa Weiss, a University of Vermont student from West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, serves up scoops at the Farr Farms pop-up gelato stand in Richmond.

Many local farmers diversify their offerings by creating new products from the things they grow and raise on their land. Farr Farms in Richmond has done just this by making its own gelato from fresh milk.

Melissa Pasanen, who writes for the Savorvore section of the Burlington Free Press, recently spoke with the Farr family – Ashley, his wife Erin and their four daughters – who keep a head of 60 cows and recently began making the frozen treat.

Farr Farms' gelato is mostly available at a pop-up stand in Richmond at the farm. Although many Vermont dairy farms offer diverse products made from their milk, like cheeses and yogurts, as of yet, not many create gelatos.

The Larson Farm in Wells has a head of 25 milking jerseys and offers raw milk among other products. Rich Wells and his family will soon make pasteurized whole-milk gelato flavors to sell to Rutland-area and Bennington County stores later this fall.

The VPR Café is made possible by Otter Creek Kitchenware in downtown Middlebury, offering over 70 lines of kitchenware, and by Kimball Brook Farm, organic milk and cream from Vermont grass-grazed cows.
