We're talking about gratitude and asking our listeners: what are you thankful for?

Thanksgiving is almost here. What are you thankful for? We're talking about gratitude and opening the phones to listeners.

We're joined by Amy Howlett, director of the Springfield Town Library. Also by Dr. Robert Macauley, Medical Director of Clinical Ethics and a palliative medicine physician at the UVM Medical Center and an ordained Episcopal priest. And by Beau Scurich, a Muslim chaplain at Middlebury College.

Literary suggestions that touch on the theme of gratitude

Below are suggestions made by Howlett:

  • The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness In A Changing World by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu with Douglas Abrams
  • Dog Songs by Mary Oliver (poetry)
  • Pilgrim At Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard (nonfiction)
  • Plan B: Further Thoughts On Faith by Anne Lamott (essays)
  • Upstream by Mary Oliver (essays)

Plus, a few of Howlett's recommendations for children:

  • Before We Eat: From Farm To Table by Pat Brisson, illustrated by Mary Azarian
  • The Thank You Book by Mo Willems
  • Wonder by R.J. Palacio

During the show, Dr. Macauley also mentioned the poetry collection Otherwise by Jane Kenyon, and specifically Kenyon's poem "Otherwise."

Broadcast live on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
