Wine doesn't have to be intimidating. Listen and learn more about the various varieties and how to pair it with dishes.

With so many varieties and pairings, choosing a wine can be pretty intimidating. That's why Vermont Edition sat down with two wine experts to demystify the world of wine.

Kevin Clayton, owner of Village Wine and Coffee in Shelburne, and Keven Ring, sommelier at Twin Farms in Barnard, joined us to serve up advice on choosing, serving and pairing wines. And we heard about the Vermont Wine School, where you can advance your education on the subject.

As for recommendations, Clayton and Ring told us about wines for every occasion.

Wine To Beat The Heat

The experts suggested light, effervescent wines. Rosé is their familiar suggestion, but they also recommended a wine from northern Spain called Txakolina (pronounced sha-ko-li-na).

Keeping It Sweet

For listeners who prefer their wine sweet, Clayton and Ring recommended a Petit Syrah, a Moscato or a Brachetto, which Clayton dubbed "the sorbet of wine."

Wine To Pair With A Burger

Finally, for a more casual dining experience that's also easy on the wallet, the experts recommended a dolcetto or a cinsault (pronounced sin-so) to bring out for a barbecue.
