Creating a cookbook of family recipes will not only preserve traditions but also bring family members together to participate in the project.

Food, traditions and fond memories. These three wonderful things come together when you create a cookbook of family recipes. Even better, the cookbook can be used as a gift that celebrates who a family is and keeps the family's flavor alive.

In this VPR Cafe podcast, food journalist, Melissa Pasanen explains how to collect long-loved family recipes and get the whole family involved in the process. To gather these tips, she spoke with another food writer, Ellen Ecker Ogden, who recently conducted a workshop on the topic. Some of Ogden's suggestions for making a family cookbook:

  • Get everyone involved including the kids to create the artwork
  • Make it easy to contribute (mail a prepared form to family members or send it via e-mail)
  • Include a "thank you" page with the names of all who submitted a recipe
