VPR Cafe: Vermont Vino Au Naturel

Iapetus is a new line of natural wine launched by Shelburne Vineyard.

Iapetus is a new line of natural wine launched by Shelburne Vineyard.

It has taken a while for Vermont wines to get noticed, and the crawl for the state's winemakers has been slow and steady. However, even sub-genres are now being recognized; in particular, natural wine.

Natural wine? Isn't all wine natural? Or is only organic wine natural? Wait, then what's traditional wine? Slow down and smell the grapes, my friend. All those questions are answered by Seven Days food writer, Hannah Palmer Egan, in this episode of The VPR Cafe. But, simply stated, natural wine focuses more on the fruit rather than the production.

Some succesful vintners in the the natural wine arena, so far, include Iapetus - a new series launched by Shelburne Vineyard winegrower, Ethan Joseph. Another player is Deirdra Heekin at La Garagista in Barnard. Heekin has garnered national attention in The New York Times and Wine Spectator, and nominated for a James Beard Award.

Egan tells us about these folks and others on the forefront of Vermont's natural wine scene in this podcast. You can also read more about Iapetus in her 2018 article, "At Shelburne Vineyard, Iapetus Captures Vermont Terroir."

This VPR Cafe episode originally aired in October of 2018.
