Safe & Sound: Vermont Voices For Change

A close-up photo of a speaker with the words, "Safe & Sound."
Safe & Sound is VPR's celebration of Vermont music.

Safe & Sound is a weekly program on VPR celebrating Vermont artists and performers. In this episode, Deejay Craig Mitchell co-produces the hour and shares BIPOC Vermont musicians and performers, speaking first-hand about their experiences of racism, living and working in Vermont.

On July 17, Vermont's largest city declared racism a public health emergency. And a recent data report from the city found that Black Burlingtonians are arrested nearly four times more frequently than white people.

Featuring original music representing many genres from Vermont artists like DJ Dakota, Rivan C., 99 Neighbors, Barika, Jenni Johnson, Big Joe Burrell and the Unknown Blues Band and more, Deejay Craig Mitchell also shares voices of BIPOC musicians from our area as they tell powerful stories of their personal, sometimes complicated Vermont experience.

Also in the hour, Sen. Patrick Leahy reflects on his friendship with the late Rep. John Lewis, and Leahy also talks about Lewis' visit to the Flynn Theater last year and his renewed hope for ending racism in Vermont.
