Vermonters Express Sadness Over Marathon Bombing

Vermont is reacting to the news of the explosions at the Boston Marathon yesterday.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says Vermont has offered help to Massachusetts law enforcement in the aftermath of the explosions during the Boston Marathon.

Shumlin says his heart goes out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives or were injured in the explosions on Monday.

He says it's heartbreaking that a festive sporting event for thousands, including many Vermonters, turned into a tragedy.

Vermont’s congressional delegation is weighing in. Senator Patrick Leahy says his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Senator Bernie Sanders called the incident a tragedy beyond words. Congressman Peter Welch says he was horrified to learn of the events, and said he’s praying for the victims, their families and the residents of the great city of Boston.

Over 100 Vermonters were running in the marathon yesterday, but there is just one reported injury. The Burlington Free Press reports that Nancy Elwess of North Hero was injured by glass in the blast, but treated herself. Elwess is a professor at SUNY Plattsburgh.
