Progressive Talk Show Host To Speak At Alternative Media Conference

The digital age continues to transform the media landscape.

This weekend, Goddard College surveys this brave new world with an Alternative Media Conference

The weekend will include TED-style talks, panels and live discussions..

One of the keynote speakers will be progressive commentator  Thom Hartmann, who hosts a top-rated syndicated radio program, as well as a syndicated television program, The Big Picture.

Hartmann has adapted to the digital landscape by offering live streaming, podcasts, smartphone apps and an interactive website.

Hartmann says he'd like to see a return to the days when Broadcast News was presented as a public service, and not as for-profit entertainment.

He also maintains that having an informed electorate and a vibrant press is vital to maintaining a functioning democratic society.

VPR's Neal Charnoff speaks with Hartmann about what role Alternative Media can play.

Neal was a reporter and VPR's All Things Considered host from 2001 to 2014. He joined VPR in 1996, hosting VPR's jazz programming, including live performances from the VPR studios and the Discover Jazz Festival. Prior to VPR, Neal was a programmer and host for WNCS in Montpelier and WDEV in Waterbury. He holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College.
