Luthier Discovers A Parallel Life

Imagine buying a mandolin on Ebay, doing a little research and finding the story of a luthier (one who makes stringed musical instruments) whose life paralleled your own in so many ways.

That’s what happened to our next  guest. And some of the story played out in our area – Burlington and Keene, NH.

Joel Eckhaus, a luthier and musician, lives in Portland, Maine. He wrote a story for Fretboard Journal about how his research has uncovered many uncanny similarities he has with the mandolin’s maker, John Henry Parker. He spoke with Vermont Edition about those similarities.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
Jane Lindholm is the host, executive producer and creator of But Why: A Podcast For Curious Kids. In addition to her work on our international kids show, she produces special projects for Vermont Public. Until March 2021, she was host and editor of the award-winning Vermont Public program Vermont Edition.
