Scott Endorses Challenger For GOP Chair

Vermont’s top Republican politician weighed in on the upcoming party leadership election, endorsing challenger David Sunderland for the GOP chairmanship over incumbent Jack Lindley.

In an email statement Friday, Lt. Gov. Phil Scott endorsed Sunderland with a call for unity, both within the state Republican Party and among Vermonters as a whole.

“The Vermont Republican Party has an opportunity to help move our state forward and unite Vermonters through reforms that will make Vermont more affordable, create more and better-paying jobs and improve our quality of life,” Scott said in the release.

Scott also mentioned that Sunderland, a former state representative from Rutland, is the right person to “unify the party and position us to succeed in 2013 so we can restore balance in Montpelier.”

Scott’s announcement made no mention of incumbent chairman Jack Lindley, who faces challenges from Sunderland and former Massachusetts Representative John MacGovern, who challenged Sen. Bernie Sanders unsuccessfully in 2012.
