New Photography Book Captures Lives and Character Of Vermonters

Peter Miller has been photographing and documenting the lives of ordinary Vermonters for close to 60 years.

His iconic black and white photos capture the essential character of Vermont, and he was recently honored on the U.S. Senate Floor by fellow photographer Patrick Leahy.

Now almost 80 years old, Miller has a new book called A Lifetime of Vermont People, which highlights the vanishing faces, places and landscapes of the state.

Miller says he tries to choose subjects who represent the independent spirit of Vermonters.

He says it's important to visit with and get to know people in advance,  and that photographing in black and white adds an abstract quality to his images.
