Montreal Bridge Condition Forces Shorter Replacement Timeline

Drive north from Vermont into Montreal and chances are pretty good that you’ll enter the city on the Champlain Bridge. The bridge spans more than 3.5 miles as it crosses the St. Lawrence River, with six lanes of traffic taking cars in and out of Montreal.

But at 50 years old, the deteriorating condition of the Champlain Bridge is causing grave concern for drivers, engineers and the Canadian government. The bridge's poor condition has prompted Quebec officials to speed up the timeline for its replacement.

Derek Conlon is a CTV Montreal reporter who has covered the story. He spoke with Vermont Edition about the status of the bridge.
