Tragic Weekend On Vermont Ski Trails

Two college students, one from the University of Vermont and one from Dartmouth, died this weekend while skiing.

Kendra Bowers, a 19-year-old UVM student from Newport, R.I. died Saturday after she lost control at Sugarbush’s Mount Ellen and hit a trail sign, according to a Vermont State Police release. She was pronounced dead at Central Vermont Hospital. Trooper Trevor Carbo said in an email to VPR that Bowers was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Flags at Dartmouth College are at half-staff Monday morning after a cross-country ski racer died Saturday at a race in Craftsbury. 20-year-old Torin Tucker of Sun Valley, Idaho was pronounced dead on the scene when efforts to revive him failed. According to the Valley News, another skier came upon Tucker unconscious on the trail and was unable to revive him.

The Dartmouth ski team, which was also competing at the UVM Nordic Carnival in Stowe, returned to campus Saturday and did not compete in any of the races scheduled on Sunday.
