Norwich Begins Planning New Fire, Police Stations

The town of Norwich is planning to remodel or replace some of its major facilities, including the fire and police stations.

A capital facilities committee has been meeting for the past three years to study the issue. Two years ago reviews were completed on the fire, police and department of public works operations facilities.  To bolster public involvement, there is a resident survey on the town website.

Now the town is asking for the public's help in identifying the right spot to build new fire and police stations. Town Manager Neil Fulton is asking residents to let him know of any sites that might be considered and meet these criteria:

  • be located on a major road and not more than one and a half miles from Dan & Whit’s store
  • provide easy access to Main Street, Route 5 North and South, Beaver Meadow Road, Turnpike Road and Union Village Road
  • preferably be in an area that is served by the fire district water system
  • have suitable soils for a septic system for fire and police station needs
  • and p rovide a minimum of 1.5 flat acres suitable for development for the police station, 2 acres for the fire station and 3.5 acres for a combined facility.

The next joint meeting between the select board and the facilities committee will be Wednesday, June 25.
