Rabid Fox Killed In Montpelier After Attacks

Public safety officials in Montpelier are warning residents to be vigilant around wildlife after a rabid fox attacked residents in the neighborhood of Northfield Street. The fox was killed by a resident on Saturday but not before it bit six people, including a child.

The fox's remains were tested at the Vermont Department of Health laboratory and rabies was detected. All six people are undergoing rabies treatment. Montpelier Fire Chief Robert Gowans is in contact with the victims and reports all are doing well.

Details of the attacks were released Saturday by the Montpelier Police Department.

Monday, the City of Montpelier asked residents to be vigilant in an announcement stating:

The City of Montpelier, with State partners from the Department of Health, Fish and Wildlife, and the Game Warden’s Office are monitoring wildlife in our community. At this point, we are aware of no other contaminated animals. However, the City asks that the Montpelier community be vigilant around wildlife. Stay away from wildlife in yards and parks. If you see wildlife that is acting erratically or aggressively please call first responders immediately by dialing 911.

For information on rabies in Vermont visit the Department of Heath website or call the rabies hotline, 1-800-4-RABIES.
