West Rutland's Carving Studio and Sculpute Center is offering an opportunity to learn sculpting techniques unique to northern Italy.

How do you take a clay model and carve it in marble two, three or even 10 times larger? Normally, you’d have to go to Italy to develop this rare skill. But The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland is bringing Italy to Vermont.

They’re offering a special six-day course in advanced Italian compass enlargement techniques.

Amore says the technique involves a triangulation method with compasses that has been in use since at least the Renaissance.

She notes that this is a skill unique to Carrara, Italy, and one which has never been taught in the U.S.

The week will focus on sculpting technique workshops, and will also include slide shows and discussions about the history of marble sculpture in Italy.
