A new study from the Vermont Law School's Institute for Energy and the Environment says that one in five Vermonters is "fuel poor," meaning that a household spends more than 10 percent of their income on energy expenditures.

With temperatures expected to dip below zero tomorrow, some might be tempted to crank up the thermostat a notch or two. But for many Vermonters, that small adjustment is a big financial burden.

A new study from the Vermont Law School’s Institute for Energy and the Environment says one in five Vermonters spends too much on energy. It’s called “fuel poverty," and Jonathan Teller-Elsberg, co-author of the study, spoke with VPR about the social and public health implications of the problem.

Lynne worked for Vermont Public from 2002 to 2022 as a producer/reporter for special news projects.
Alex was a reporter and host of VPR's local All Things Considered. He was also the co-host and co-creator of the VPR program Brave Little State.
