Last year, Veterans Affairs whistleblowers said that patients were dying because they didn't have access to medical care at the nation's VA hospitals. They also claimed that officials at some hospitals were falsifying records to make it look like wait times were not as bad as they really were.
The scandal led to the resignation of Veterans Affairs chief Eric Shinseki and changes to the VA hospital system. One of these changes included the ability of veterans to choose private medical care if they fit certain criteria.
VPR's Charlotte Albright has been reporting on the VA Medical Center in White River Junction and she joined Vermont Edition to give an update one year into the story.
