Sheriff Gives Up On Bellows Falls Site For Detention Center

Sheriff Keith Clark says he is now looking at alternative sites for a proposed 150-bed detention center.

The Windham County Sheriff says he will not consider the former Liberty Mill in Bellows Falls as the site of a proposed 150-bed detention center.

Sheriff Keith Clark says a recent engineering study found too many issues in the building and he is now looking at other locations in the region.

The town of Rockingham holds a nonbinding Town Meeting Day vote to see if there is support for Clark's project.

But the vote only asks if residents will support a detention center in Bellows Falls, a village in Rockingham, and Clark could find an alternative site within the town of Rockingham, but outside of the village.

Sheriff Clark also announced that he has contacted the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) to assist with the project. In the near future the NIC will be sending an assessment team to the county. The justice assessment team is the first of many steps in the process with which the NIC will assist.

Clark says he will let the public know when the organization staff are in the area.
