Tuesday's primary election saw a record-breaking high voter turnout. There were concerns that moving the primary date to the second Tuesday in August would suppress turnout but this didn't happen.
According to Secretary of State Jim Condos, more than 119,0000 people participated in the primary election, or roughly 26 percent of all registered voters.
Condos says the major factor influencing turnout is the number of competitive races not the date of the primary. This year there were three.
"I don't think that the earlier date has really had a significant impact," Condos says. "I think it still comes down to the candidates and how competitive the races are."
Condos says many voters decided to vote by early ballot this year and this development also boosted overall turnout.
