For the first time in 25 years, Alpine World Cup races are coming to the eastern United States. Women's giant slalom and slalom Audi FIS World Cup races are being held at Killington Thanksgiving weekend, and the resort is looking for around 300 volunteers to help pull it off."Volunteer positions range from meeting and greeting, to course crew work, assisting in registration and media headquarters, and more," a resort press release states. Volunteer applications are now being accepted at Killington Resort's website.
The races will be held the weekend of Nov. 26 and 27. But not all volunteer positions are limited to the weekend of the event. The resort is looking for volunteers to start as early as Nov. 19, and through Nov. 30.
For those who would rather watch the races than work them, Killington is offering free standing room admission and parking to spectators. Tickets for VIP and grandstand seating have already sold out.
"The general public is invited to view the women’s giant slalom and slalom races in a free general admission area when Killington hosts the first Alpine World Cup event in the eastern U.S. in 25 years," the press release states. "The free viewing area will accommodate approximately 7,500 spectators. Killington will also provide free parking and shuttle buses for event spectators during the weekend."
Among those expected to compete in Killington are U.S. Ski Team racers Julia Mancuso, Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn.
The last Alpine World Cup event held in the East was at Waterville Valley, New Hampshire in 1991. The only other FIS Alpine World Cup races held in Vermont were at Stratton Mountain in 1978.
