Burlington Teachers, School Board Reach 'Tentative Agreement' And Avoid Strike

School is in session in Burlington's school district Thursday, as teachers will not being going on strike. The Burlington School board and teachers' union reached a settlement Wednesday after an all-day meeting with a mediator.

A press release from the Burlington Education Association stated the teachers and school board reached a "tentative agreement" on a one-year contract, but details won't be released until both sides have ratified it.

The press release quoted Fran Brock, a Burlington High School history teacher and the president of the union:

“This is terrific news for Burlington’s students. In the end, the board shares the same deep devotion to the city’s children as we do, and our teams were able to reach an agreement that will allow us all to devote ourselves to making our schools even better for all of our students.”

The teachers' union had voted last week to go on strike if an agreement wasn't reached this week.

The vote to strike came after the school board imposed working conditions in September after the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement on a new contract.

The school board and teachers had been trying to reach an agreement on a new contract for the past year.
