Killington Ski Resort Opens This Weekend

Martha Howe

This week’s cold temperatures have helped Vermont get a jump on the ski season. Killington ski resort announced it will open to season passholders Friday and to the general public on Saturday.

Adam White of Ski Vermont says a number of resorts have begun making snow, but Killington is the first in the east – again – to open for the season. He says the resort has been a leader in state of the art snowmaking, but now that it's hosting the World Cup Thanksgiving weekend, he says it’s pushed them even more.

“This is the third year in a row in which they’re going to have these races and that has been even more of a motivator to get a skiable surface down there,” said White. “And they really extend it to their passholders and guests by saying, you know, we’re putting the work in why don’t you come and enjoy it and get a jump on the season before anyone else.”

According to a Killington press release, there will be roughly 600 vertical feet of open trails.  Skiing and snowboarding will be on advanced terrain only and no beginner trails will be open.

Killington spokesperson Courtney Difiori said last year the resort opened November 8,  but the two previous years they were able to open in October.
